American and European fitness companies are striving to patent various age old Yoga Asanas (postures) which are in the domain of public knowledge over the centuries.

To safeguard and to prevent such unfair patenting, Indian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, have prepared patent formats for 900 Yoga Asanas and have included them in the digitalized Traditional Knowledge Library in India.

The source of these Yoga Asanas is in existence in the Bhagwat Gita – A holy religious text of Hinduism.

The video recordings of the Yoga Asanas available in the said library will prove as prior public knowledge to fight against such unfair patenting. A vibrant question –

The Highest court in the European Union has ruled that the famous brand Budweiser by Anheuser- Busch InBev may not be registered in the union.

Anheuser-Busch InBev was first established in the United States and two of its brands Budweiser and Bud Light are the leaders in the beer segment. The Registration was opposed by a Czech company Budejovicky Budvar, who were proprietors of the mark Budweiser in Austria and Germany. The appeal was dismissed after over a decade of legal disputes between the parties.

The European Court of Justice ruled in favour of Budejovicky Budvar despite the fact that their protection for the mark had expired.

A spokesperson for Budvar said that ruling meant that the threat of Anheuser-Busch InBev challenging its trademarks in other countries may come to an end.

Microsoft has settled a copyright violation case with a Chinese chain of internet cafes known as Guangdong Dongguan Dynamic Internet cafes Network Communications Co., Ltd, for unauthorized use of its Windows operating system in their cyber cafes. The case was filed in Dongguan Intermediate People's Court in 2009 for violation of Microsoft s copyright related rights in their Windows operating software.

The Dynamic Company, another name of the said company, settled the issue with Microsoft out of court by agreeing to pay hundred thousand Yuan as costs. The company has also agreed to buy 700 copies of software for operating Windows for using in their chain of cyber cafes.

Hyderabad Haleem, a lentil-meat preparation prepared during Ramadan (a holy fasting period of the Muslims), has been registered as a Geographical Indication(GI) by the Government of India.

Geographical Indications are used to indicate to the purchasing public that the goods are of a high quality and reputation as they pertain to a particular territory.

Hyderabad Haleem is prepared by a special method which is unique to the makers in the city itself. The president of the Hyderabad Haleem Makers Association was awarded the GI certificate at a special program, it is now decided by this registration that although there is no bar in preparing the Haleem, no one can market it as Hyderabad Haleem.

A prescribed process is to be followed by the makers of Hyderabad Haleem and the symbol of GI is to be printed in the packaging of the Haleem.
